Recap: ROM Take Our Kids to Work Day

Last week, the ROM hosted a fun-filled Take Our Kids to Work Day for thirteen Grade 9’s on November 2nd. Welcomed by Dan Sibley,Chief Human Resources Officer, and Nick Bobrow, CFO & Deputy Director, Operations, the kids started the day with a couple of fun ice breaker activities to get to know each another. Next, the students engaged in an interesting and important Health & Safety presentation lead by Ellen Shaeen-Hanright (ROM OH&S).

For some wildlife photographers, a kill shot is the ultimate goal. It creates compelling photographs that highlight moments people don’t often get to see. For others, it’s a difficult scene to witness from behind the lens. Don, the 2015 Wildlife Photographer of the Year, had no idea that the predatory behaviour captured in the photograph he took on the last day of his northern adventure would be more than just an interesting shot. It’s a powerful story about what can happen when the Earth becomes warmer and two competing predators, the red fox and the Arctic fox, are driven to cross paths...

Q: Do you visit the museum often?

A: Yes, I have a couple of young kids. We come on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes if there’s a special event, but also sometimes we come just to wander around. It’s a great place to explore—one of the places we go to just spend time in the city. That’s a big thing for our family, to be out and about in Toronto as much as we can.

The orange flag on this Red Knot's leg indicates it was banded in Argentina.

Back in 1995 ROM ornithologist Dr. Allan Baker was part of an international team that banded a small shorebird in Argentina, a Red-knot soon to become dubbed Moonbird, with a leg band with the number B95 on it.

The ROM Biodiversity will send a crew to salvage two blue whales that washed ashore on the coast of Newfoundland last week. 

Rare Chinese Chicken Cup Auctioned for $36 million

An original and very rare Chicken Cup, that was created as part of a set, was recently sold at an auction hosted by Sotheby's. The ROM is currently displaying another cup from this set in The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors.

The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors is set to open at the ROM on March 8, 2014. This exhbition will give visitors insight into the Palace's history through approximately 250 treasures from the Palace Museum’s collection of over 1.5 million objects.
