Portrait of CarolynCarolyn Pioro is a freelance editor and writer living in Toronto. In high school she was a star field hockey player and represented Ontario in trampoline at the national championships. At the University of Toronto she rowed competitively, winning Ontario titles and placing second at Boston’s prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. Carolyn waitressed at Toronto's bustling Terroni Restaurant and was at her happiest while dancing to electronic music at Toronto clubs. This lifetime of activity and flair for the dramatic led her to a Toronto-based circus school where she trained to become a skilled aerialist. In 2005, at the age of 26, while training for a southwestern Ontario tour, an accident occurred on the flying trapeze and she sustained a high-level spinal cord injury. Carolyn has no sensation or mobility below her shoulders and lives with quadriplegia. 
 
Carolyn has an honours BA in semiotics and environmental studies from the University of Toronto, and, after her accident, completed a certificate in Magazine and Web Publishing from Ryerson University. She currently works freelance in many aspects of the magazine industry.
