ROMKids Show: The One About Earth Day

Tune in every Tuesday at 2:00 pm on Instagram Live @ROMtoronto as ROM Kids Coordinator and Camp Director Kiron Mukherjee combines his passion for children’s education with storytelling to bring to life science, history and art for you and your loved ones in the comfort of your own home. Kiron will share activities, easy at-home crafts, behind the scenes anecdotes and fun facts—all connected to the ROM collections.

Mark Peck. This time on the ROMKids Show we celebrate the only planet we have, Earth! Ornithologist Mark Peck joins us to talk about the importance of protecting our world, fighting back against climate change, and how to take part in Earth Day safely this year. Then we’ll learn about plastics and the dangers they cause to marine life with a jellyfish bag demonstration.

MATERIALS:

  • mason jar
  • water
  • plastic bag
  • blue food dye
  • elastic band

1. Ball up the bottom of the bag into a ball. Use an elastic band to hold it together.

2. Fill your mason jar with water. You can also add blue food dye if you’d like.

3. Place your bag into your mason jar, and shake it up. Compare what you’ve made to this picture of a live jellyfish. Do you see how a bag can look similar to a jellyfish. And if it looks similar to us as humans, just imagine how similar it would look to an animal that eats jellyfish. It’s important to dispose of all garbage and recyclables appropriately and responsibly!
