As native Torontonians, brothers John and Paul Johnston have been visiting ROM for as long as they can remember. “ROM became part of our lives at a very young age,” recalls John, “and it was always a family experience. Exploring ages long past – it was magic to us.”
Now, years later and retired, John and Paul still find themselves in those galleries together. “The Museum has evolved so much over our lifetimes,” says John, “but there are always unique interesting objects, and something new to learn. We want to help preserve those objects and experiences for future generations.”
With this in mind, the brothers worked with ROM Governors’ Legacy team to establish a planned estate gift and to create the Johnston Family Endowment Fund. Their gifts will support ROM Conservation and honour the experiences the family has shared at the Museum over the years. “The transfer of securities meant that ROM would have immediate access to funds for vital conservation efforts,” explains John, “while a gift in my will can continue to further that mission in the future.”
Through their gift, John and Paul join the Currelly Legacy Society (CLS), a visionary group of donors preserving ROM’s legacy for generations to come. “We were inspired by the wonderful and interesting friends we met through ROM who were already CLS members,” says John. Members receive invitations to exclusive events, special access to the Museum, and opportunities for lifelong learning.
“We really enjoy the CLS events, and it’s even more meaningful to attend them with friends who share our commitment to conservation,” says John. “We stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us and in ages past. It is extremely important to preserve the many fascinating objects from past ages for others to see and learn about, now and in the future.”
