It’s time to get ready for Earth Day (April 22) with our favourite game – Minecraft!
Climate change and sustainability issues on Earth are going to require some creative solutions, so it’s time to key into your imagination and build some solutions in Minecraft.
In this interactive 1-hour session, you will begin to transform your Minecraft community into a more sustainable place to live. Taking inspiration from Museum Educators, virtual museum galleries, and close-up looks at real objects and belongings in the collections at ROM, the session begins with a solutions brainstorm.
Then, Museum Educators and Minecraft Educators will build along with students, providing ideas and inspiration on how to bring these solutions to life in Minecraft. From green roofs to community gardens with the Three Sisters, to steam turbines, to representing energy transducers with redstone and command blocks, the Sustainable Style team has tips and tricks to support Minecrafters at all levels of their Minecraft journey.
Can’t attend live? No problem. In this special YouTube Live Format, you’ll be able to pause and play the lesson to go at the pace that’s right for your students. If you can't attend live you can still follow along with the recording through the links you’ll receive when you book.

Use creativity, problem-solving, and innovative thinking to construct climate and sustainability solutions in Minecraft.
French Classes
While the virtual lesson is only offered in English for now, you can follow this tutorial to translate the game language into French.
Dialogue in this Minecraft World will appear English if the game settings are switched to French (Canada).
Preparation
Preparation:
Students should be comfortable with the basics of Minecraft, including movement and the breaking and placing of blocks. Students should also be familiar with using the camera and book & quill to document learning.
We also encourage exploration of some areas the Sustainable Style Virtual Tour with students ahead of time to begin brainstorming solutions in advance, familiarizing them with the virtual exhibition and how to navigate it.
New to Minecraft?
We recommend that students are familiar with the basic Minecraft controls taught in the How to Play tutorials in the Minecraft Lesson Library, particularly:
- How to Play: Movement (Keyboard and Mouse / Touchscreen)
- How to Play: Break and Place (Keyboard and Mouse / Touchscreen)

Requirements
Class set of devices with Minecraft Education installed.
Minecraft Licenses are not provided by ROM. They must be provided by your school or board, or through the Camps and Clubs program for homeschool or other educators.
