Cabbagetown is a heritage community dating back to the mid 1850s, brought back to life through restoration, renovation and community pride. The name began as a derogatory term used by Toronto’s wealthy British residents. The area was largely settled by Irish famine immigrants who landed in Toronto in the late 1840s. Cabbages were a vegetable that grew well in the area’s sandy soil and provided a source of food as well as income for the new community.
On our walk, we take in a variety of architectural styles, including builder designed Victorian homes and simplified workers’ cottages, sites such as Riverdale Farm, all while learning the stories of people who lived in this area.
