You are Lucretius Satrius Valens a wealthy Roman politician. You spend much of your time in Rome, but you come from Pompeii, where you have gained political support by financing public games in the amphitheatre, and championing the interests of your supporters.
Fortunately, you had the resources to leave the city before the most deadly phase of the eruption unfolded. You had been planning to return to Rome for a while; you were becoming frustrated with domestic inconveniences caused by repairs needed for your property. Over the past few months, water pipes to your garden fountains had broken and your decorated walls have started cracking. It is estimated that more than 75% of Pompeians survived disaster by leaving the city before it was too late.
