Remembering Sir Christopher Ondaatje

ROM is deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Christopher Ondaatje, O.C., C.B.E. 

An explorer, author, philanthropist, and lifelong champion of cultural understanding, Sir Christopher believed that museums have the power to bring people together through a shared appreciation of art, history, and heritage. His generosity, passion, and foresight helped establish ROM as a leading destination for the study and appreciation of South Asian art and culture.  

In 1999, inspired by his enduring connection to Canada, Sir Christopher made the founding gift that launched the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery—the Museum’s first gallery dedicated to South Asian art and culture. His leadership inspired the broader community, galvanizing support to establish an endowed curatorship dedicated to South Asian art and culture and expand ROM’s collections and creating new opportunities for Canadians and visitors alike to engage with the richness, diversity, and enduring significance of South Asia. His contributions reflected a profound belief that Canada’s cultural institutions should celebrate the histories, traditions, and perspectives of the communities they serve.  

Sir Christopher’s impact on ROM will be felt for generations to come. His generosity and vision transformed the Museum’s engagement with South Asian art and culture, fostering greater understanding, connection, and appreciation across communities. ROM is grateful for his remarkable legacy and for the lasting impact his generosity will have on the many people who continue to encounter and appreciate South Asian art and culture at the Museum.
