Explore the evolution of Toronto’s financial district on a fascinating walk that traces its development from 1827 through the 20th century. Beginning at the former Bank of Montreal’s Toronto headquarters—now home to the Hockey Hall of Fame—we examine three key periods of bank architecture: ornate Victorian and Edwardian buildings, the grand structures of the 1920s and 1930s, and the dramatic rise of modernist skyscrapers starting in 1967.
Along the way, we’ll learn more about how banks have used architecture to convey wealth, stability, and power. See the city’s first Yonge Street skyscraper, learn about a lawyer’s tragic death at the TD Centre, and explore a building where actual gold is embedded in its infrastructure, reflecting the subtle messages these institutions project about security and prosperity.

The walk will start at the northwest corner of Front Street and Yonge Street (outside the old Bank of Montreal building, now the Hockey Hall of Fame). The walk will end at the Allen Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place.
The walk is approximately 90 minutes long.
