Threading South Asia: Shisha Embroidery

Threading South Asia is a new workshop series at ROM exploring South Asian embroidery techniques and traditions and is inspired by the South Asian textile collections. Led by skilled artists and cultural practitioners, each workshop invites participants to learn foundational stitches, understand materials, and create a small piece of their own. Through this series, participants not only learn the technical aspects of embroidery, but also gain insight into the social, historical, and cultural contexts that shape the work. No prior experience is necessary. 

Join us for a workshop introducing the techniques and history of shisha embroidery, a textile practice distinguished by the small mirrors attached to fabric with decorative stitches. Shisha (glass) embroidery has been historically used to adorn garments, textiles, and ceremonial objects, and carries both decorative and symbolic significance. Inspired by the textile collections at ROM, participants will learn foundational methods, including mirror placement, basic stitch structures, and pattern planning. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own personal garments, tote bags, or fabrics to adorn.
