Showcasing a new year of stunning photographs
ROM is delighted to present this year's competition finalists and winners in a vibrant new exhibition.
Powerful, inspiring, and enlightening, the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition invites viewers into a world of extraordinary images and visual storytelling.
The world's longest-running and most prestigious annual nature photography competition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year attracts and recognizes the world's best nature photography, and has done so every year since 1965.
Each year, the annual competition - organized by the Natural History Museum in London, UK - receives tens of thousands of image submissions by aspiring photographers of all ages. One hundred photographs from this year's competition - the best of the best - will be on view at ROM this fall.
Experience our world in vivid detail and see some of the most unusual species and their habitats in ways you never imagined. Each back-lit photograph provides exquisite quality and depth. From the photographer's eye to the camera's lens, viewers become witnesses to the lives animals live and the challenges they face. Emotive, surprising, and sometimes sobering, glimpses of life on our planet are showcased through exceptional talent, technical expertise, and perfectly captured moments.
The Competition
Submission categories vary, and cover themes such as Animal Portraits, Animals in their Environment, Urban Wildlife, Natural Artistry, Underwater, and many more, while a dynamic photojournalism portfolio is featured in a hard-hitting documentary section. In all, each year's new roster of photographs reflects the ever-changing breadth of life in our natural world. In addition to adults, the exhibition includes images taken by young submitters in three age categories, highlighting the astonishing work of these up and coming photographers.
The competition uses photography to celebrate the wonderful diversity of life, to inspire and inform, and to create advocates for the planet. It champions ethical wildlife photography, rewarding truthful representations of nature that display respect for animals and the environment, and that call attention to the beauty - and fragility - of this world.
This exhibition offers photographers an internationally acclaimed platform to showcase their works, while celebrating our beautiful planet and encouraging us all to think differently about our impact on our shared home.
Awards and Recognition
Winning the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is the highest level of recognition for wildlife photographers worldwide. Judged over two rounds by a jury of international experts, competition finalists and winners are announced at an awards ceremony hosted at the Natural History Museum, London, where photographs are premiered in a major exhibition before embarking on a tour to international destinations, including ROM.
