About this lesson
Dig up the real story about pyramids, pharaohs, and mummies with the ROM Minecraft team.
‘Tis the season for spooky and scary stories. Lots of tales you may hear around this time feature mummies – but do they get the story right?
Join our educators as we explore a miniature version of Ancient Egypt in Minecraft, and use virtual re-creations of the Galleries of Africa: Egypt at ROM to uncover the truth. We’ll explore what daily life was like in Ancient Egypt, learn how pyramids were built, and learn the stories of some famous pharaohs. Finally, we’ll learn more about Egyptian mummies, and discover that there’s really nothing scary about them at all!
Once we know the real stories, we’ll learn how to build them in our Minecraft world, and use the Minecraft book and quill to record and save them for the entire school year.
Can’t attend live? No problem! In this special YouTube Live Format, you’ll be able to pause and play the lesson to go at the pace that’s right for your students. If you can’t attend live, you can still follow along with the recording through the links you’ll receive when you book.

Preparation
Preparation:
Students should be comfortable with the basics of Minecraft, including movement and the breaking and placing of blocks. If you wish your students to use code to build a pyramid (optional), we also recommend doing a few code builder tutorial worlds leading up to this session.

We recommend that students are familiar with the basic Minecraft controls taught in the How to Play tutorials in the Minecraft Lesson Library, particularly:
- How to Play: Movement (Keyboard and Mouse / Touchscreen)
- How to Play: Break and Place (Keyboard and Mouse / Touchscreen)
You can also check out our New to Minecraft section on our Minecraft Program Support site.
