ROM partners with Toronto's Blyth Academy to offer Summer School in the City

Accredited courses provide unique learning experiences for secondary students

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), in partnership with Blyth Academy in Toronto, launches a unique summer school experience for high school students. Summer School in the City is designed to offer students the opportunity to take enriched, accredited secondary school courses with Toronto’s top cultural institutions.

The ROM’s summer program, offering fully accredited Grade 11 and 12 high school courses, includes access to both public galleries and the Museum’s vaults, giving students exclusive, hands-on access to the ROM’s behind the scenes holdings. Approximately one third of the course will be spent on site at the ROM, with the remainder based at Blyth’s Yorkville campus. Class size will average 8 to 10 students. ROM courses include Grade 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology (HSP3M) & Grade 12 Classical Civilization (LVV4U).

“Summer School in the City provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to have access to the ROM’s collections, providing a rich learning opportunity through the study of real artifacts,” said Scott McDonald, ROM’s Manager of Education.

In addition to the ROM, TIFF Bell Lightbox, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Outward Bound Canada at Evergreen Brick Works are all introducing similar Summer 2012 courses through this unique program. Students will work alongside each institution’s educational and curatorial staff to provide a transformative and exciting learning experience. With an emphasis on experiential, hands-on learning, these programs will afford students access to the physical and human resources of Toronto’s top cultural institutions.

This opportunity is available to students from across the GTA. Access to these programs – up to and including full scholarships – has been made possible to students from all financial backgrounds through a generous grant. Courses are available to students during the July and August month-long summer programs. To register visit: www.blytheducation.com/Academy/SummerPartners.aspx
