Learn about the state of design and the decorative arts in the period leading up to 1914, the year the ROM was founded. There were many issues that designers were debating at this period including the shift in approach from arts and crafts to art and industry, how to accommodate good design to the demands of manufacturing processes, the turning away from design based on historical precedent to the search for new forms appropriate to an object's function and the materials with which it was made.
