Gregory Fewster (PhD, University of Toronto) studies how and why people collect things. His award-winning book The Authentic Paul (McGill-Queen’s University Press) analyzed the cultural politics that animated ancient and early modern debates about the authenticity of a collection of letters attributed to an ancient religious specialist named Paul. More recently, he has moved into the realm of collections history and museum archaeology, investigating the practices and cultural conditions that enabled archaeologists in the long nineteenth century to assemble vast collections of ancient objects to prove, debunk, or illustrate the Bible. Greg is enthusiastic about archival research, bringing forgotten stories about collectors and collections to light, and showing why these stories matter for museums today.
