ROM's 2026 Immortal Gala honours two Canadian leaders shaping our understanding of the natural world
TORONTO, November 3, 2026 — The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) honoured John Bianchini, Chair and CEO of Hatch, and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky, O.C., at the sold-out 2026 ROM Immortal Gala: Forces of Nature on November 2, celebrating their extraordinary contributions to environmental stewardship, public awareness, and innovation. The black-tie event raised important funds in support of ROM's exhibitions, research, and educational programming, including its pioneering Climate Change Initiative.
Celebrated author and environmental advocate Margaret Atwood, C.C., served as Honorary Gala Chair, lending her presence to an evening focused on environmental leadership. The Gala was supported by a range of generous donors and sponsors, including Prestige Sponsor The Hennick Family Foundation.
Through engineering, industry, and visual storytelling, Bianchini and Burtynsky have each helped deepen public understanding of humanity's relationship with the environment. Their work reflects the spirit of this year's Forces of Nature theme and ROM's commitment to fostering dialogue at the intersection of art, culture, science, and nature.
“John and Edward have both illuminated our relationship with the natural world in powerful and distinct ways,” said Janice Price, President & CEO of ROM Governors. “Through their respective fields, they challenge us to think differently, act responsibly, and imagine a future shaped by innovation and care. We are honoured to have celebrated their impact and grateful to the community of supporters who came together at the ROM Immortal Gala to raise vital funds for ROM.”
The Gala Committee was led by visionary co-chairs Helen Burstyn, C.M. and Amy Burstyn-Fritz, with steadfast support from the committee, comprised of Suresh Pal Singh Bhalla, Shikha Kasal, Josh Kay, Anne Maggisano, Heather Ogden, Roly Browning Watt, and Jeff Willner.
Guests experienced exclusive after-hours access to select ROM galleries, curator-led encounters, live performances, and immersive culinary experiences inspired by Canada's diverse landscapes and ecosystems. A moving tribute film celebrated the honourees' enduring contributions to environmental awareness, climate action, and global dialogue.
Funds raised through the ROM Immortal Gala help advance ROM's mission to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding of the natural and cultural worlds, and engage new generations through exhibitions, research, and educational programming. Planning is already underway for the 2027 ROM Immortal Gala, taking place November 1, 2027 and co-chaired by Helen Burstyn, C.M., Amy Burstyn Fritz, and Roly Browning Watt.
