Member-Elected Trustee
Overview
As a ROM Member, you have the opportunity to participate as a voter in the election of ROM’s Member-elected Trustees. ROM Members elect four of the 21 positions on the Board of Trustees. Each membership is entitled to one vote.
ROM seeks leaders who share our values, reflect the diversity of our city and province, and possess strong business acumen and relevant board experience. We are currently recruiting qualified candidates to run for one open position in the 2027 election. Members interested in running are encouraged to review the nomination process outlined below.
General Information
Founded over a century ago, The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is a globally renowned institution celebrated for its multidisciplinary collections, groundbreaking research, and iconic architecture. Spanning art, culture, and nature from around the world and across the ages, the Museum’s comprehensive collection—coupled with exceptional exhibitions, installations, and programs—has made ROM a leading cultural destination for local, national, and international visitors.
Welcoming more than 1 million people annually, ROM is the most-attended museum in Canada and ranks among the top 10 cultural institutions in North America. As a world-class research institute housing over 18 million artworks, cultural objects, and natural history specimens across more than 40 gallery and exhibition spaces, ROM is one of the few truly multidisciplinary museums in the world.
Our mission is to transform lives by helping people understand the past, make sense of the present, and come together to shape a shared future. To achieve this, we build and share our global collections, create knowledge, inspire learning, encourage gathering, and spark exchange on topics that matter to our communities.
In 2027, ROM Members will elect one Trustee to the Board. We are seeking a candidate with significant experience in areas relevant to ROM’s business, paired with a deep commitment to our values and purpose. The ideal candidate will contribute insight and innovation, provide diversity of thought and experience, and demonstrate an understanding of sound governance.
To qualify, candidates must meet the requirements outlined in the ROM Membership-Elected Trustee Management Policy. All candidates must:
- Be a current ROM Member;
- Be a resident of Ontario and at least 18 years of age;
- Not be in a conflict-of-interest position with respect to ROM;
- Not have exhibited any inappropriate conduct;
- Be nominated by 25 or more current ROM Members; and
- Not be a current or retired employee of ROM. (Note: Current or retired employees who are ROM Members remain eligible to nominate candidates and vote in the election.)
The Board is the governing body responsible for the conduct and affairs of ROM. A Trustee acts in a position of trust, is responsible for effective governance, and represents the interests of the Museum as a whole. For clarity, all Trustees—whether appointed, elected, or serving by virtue of office—represent the institution as a whole and do not represent any specific sub-group or membership category. For more information, please see the ROM Board of Trustees Role Description.
The Board holds four committee meetings quarterly (September, November, February, and May) and four Board meetings quarterly (October, December, March, and June). Trustees are expected to serve on two committees. Additional time commitments include travel and pre-meeting preparation.
The term for a Membership-elected Trustee is three years, beginning July 1 of the election year. Incumbent Trustees may seek re-election for one additional three-year term but must follow the same nomination process as new candidates.
