In 1899, John Thomas Moore set out to transform a tract of oak forest into an elegant residential enclave—an idyllic, park-like community of roses and flowering shrubs perched high above the city’s pollution. For a host of economic and practical reasons, it would take nearly two decades for his ambitious vision to fully take shape.
Discover how the neighbourhood’s development closely mirrors the strategies—and substantial risks—taken by developers today. True to Moore’s original dream, it remains one of Toronto’s most desirable addresses. Along the way, you’ll see homes of famous, lesser-known, and colourfully bohemian residents, and learn how the city later transformed the original railway built to serve the area into the green park spaces enjoyed today.
