What makes for a delightful picnic? Food and drink? Poetry? Music? The Picnics and Pastimes installation at ROM offers a window into the pleasures, pastimes, and artistic heritage of Iran during the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736). A royal picnic, depicted on a large, treasured tile arch from the collections, is complemented by exceptional objects from the period.

This Learn & Explore session features Fahimeh Ghorbani, a PhD student in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto. Fahimeh will share some history of the Safavid period and play music on the tanbur, a long-necked lute like the one displayed in the installation.
