Cyprus comes from the Greek "Kypros", meaning copper. Copper played an essential role in early Cypriot history since it is used to make bronze – highly valued in the ancient world. This rare bronze relief depicts a man carrying a large copper ingot.
A reconstructed open-air sanctuary features the ROM's collection of votive sculptures from the Sanctuary of Apollo at Frangissa (near the ancient city of Tamassos), discovered in 1885.
The unique appearance of Cypriot statues, which are made of local limestone rather than imported marble, highlight the artistic individuality of Cyprus.
This grave display, from the Cypro-Geometric period, illustrates the archaeological context from which much of the Cypriot pottery would once have been excavated.

The island of Cyprus is rich in natural resources and lies between the eastern and western worlds. From the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period trade with, and control of, ancient Cyprus was important to the Greeks and Romans to the west and the Assyrians, Phoenicians and Persians to the east. The unique artistic personality of Cypriot work in this period was formed by these many competing influences, showcased by the ROM's collection of extraordinarily beautiful ancient Cypriot artifacts.
