In celebrating the contributions of ROM’s staff and volunteers on International Women’s Day 2025, we also reaffirm our commitment to fostering a workplace where women thrive.
At ROM, women help drive the Museum’s mission – over the past 15 years, ROM’s leadership landscape has evolved, with women now holding more than half of the Museum’s executive leadership positions.
Heidi Sobol, Senior Manager of Conservation, notes a significant shift toward gender balance in leadership during her 18 years at the Museum.
“When I started, senior management was entirely male. Now, it’s almost entirely female,” she says. “It’s no longer something we actively think about – it’s just how things operate now.”
Melanie Foord, Senior Project Specialist with ROM’s Facilities and Security department, says she was pleased to see strong representation and support of women when she first joined the Museum four years ago.
“It's inspiring to see women leading major projects, including the transformational OpenROM construction, and to know that my voice is heard,” Foord says. “At ROM, when I have an idea, I’m encouraged to take ownership and make it happen.”
Women’s voices should be leading the way. We are life-givers, life sustainers, and water carriers. The more we support one another, the stronger we all become.
Leading the way
International Women’s Day serves as an opportunity to reflect – and take further action, notes Leslie McCue, Manager of Indigenous Learning and Programs.
“Women’s voices should be leading the way,” she says. “We are life-givers, life sustainers, and water carriers. The more we support one another, the stronger we all become.”
Stephanie Pascual, AVP of Annual Programs with ROM Governors, points to the collaborative leadership as an example of how women are shaping the direction and success of the Museum.
“We are actively working to build connections and strengthen communication across the institution,” Pascual says.
