TORONTO, ON (December 20, 2021) — As the year draws to a close, ROM offers a first look at its preliminary lineup of special exhibitions spanning art, culture and nature scheduled for the 2022 calendar year. Highlights include a major cross-cultural partnership with Greece’s new Acropolis Museum, a solo exhibition of new work by internationally renowned Cree artist Kent Monkman, and an overview of Canadian modern craft and design. Further details on additional 2022 exhibitions to follow.

ROM x new Acropolis Museum: An Iconic Exchange (March 12 – September 30, 2022)

In celebration of 80 years of Canada-Greece relations, ROM is participating in an exchange of iconic objects with the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece. Through this partnership, ROM will display one of the best preserved and most stunning of the Korai group of female sculptures from the Acropolis of Athens, that represent some of the most iconic images in Greek culture and civilization. In exchange, ROM will send two exquisite Panathenaic Amphorae (vases) to the new Acropolis Museum for a six-month residency. Kore 670 is considered a particularly fascinating example of The Korai for its fine detail and preserved colour, offering us a portal into the history of ancient Greek art and aesthetics, and an incredible story of discovery. This is a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s great ancient sculptures, in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Kent Monkman: Being Legendary (October 8, 2022 – March 19, 2023)

In association with Kent Monkman Studios, ROM presents Being Legendary, a new original exhibition exploring how deeply Cree knowledge is embedded in the land through the stories of artist Kent Monkman’s alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. Miss Chief, a time-travelling, gender-fluid legendary being, bears witness to colonial destruction inflicted upon her people, interruptions in the transmission of their knowledge and culture, and their ultimate resurgence, beauty and power.

Canadian Modern Design: Highlights from ROM’s Collection (December 3, 2022 – September 4, 2023)

Canadian modern design flourished out of the technological advances of the Second World War, as consumer demand, a national desire to join the world stage, and the cultural and social movements of the era ignited national creativity and ingenuity. In 2022, ROM shines a spotlight on Canadian design and designers in an exhibition drawn from its permanent collection of limited-edition, and mass-produced objects of cultural significance and international renown. Spanning furniture, glassware, ceramics, fashion, jewellery, textiles, electronics, and graphic design from 1940 to today, visitors will discover fascinating Canadian stories told through the objects that defined the era.

New and ongoing presentations

Don’t miss ROM’s Willner Madge Gallery, Dawn of Life, a 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art permanent gallery, newly opened on December 4, as well as Great Whales: Up Close and Personal (July 16, 2021 – March 20, 2022), Wildlife Photographer of the Year (November 20, 2021 – April 24, 2022), Unmasking the Pandemic: From Personal Protection to Personal Expression (September 18, 2021 – March 27, 2022) and My Pandemic Story: Youth Create Portraits of a Pandemic (October 23, 2021 – March 27, 2022).
