Matthews Family Court of Chinese Sculpture | Level 1
Walk amongst statues that span over 1,500 years of Chinese history.
A green glazed ceramic Yizhou Luohan statue from the 10th century sits serenely at the gallery's entrance.
Smaller works complement the larger works, shedding light on the stylistic development of deities in Chinese religion, as well as of Judaism, Islam and Christianity in China from the 3rd to 19th centuries AD.
This three-metre tall marble standing Buddha from the late 6th century showcases the elegance of the larger works in the gallery.
The largest object in the collection doesn't fit in the gallery. The bronze figure of Vairocana Buddha, at almost 8 feet high and 5 feet wide, welcomes visitors in the Samuel Hall Currelly Gallery, also on Level 1.

Sculptures and sculptural art held a significant role in all aspects of Chinese historical life, and the representation of religious deities was a critical component of Chinese religious culture. Walk amidst statues that span over 1,500 years of Chinese history. Powerful and serene, the individuality of each is a testament to the expertise and creativity of the artist. Stone, bronze, marble, ceramic and wood – all mediums are represented - providing a striking narrative of the stylistic development of Chinese sculpture through the ages.
