ROMKids Show: The One About Blue and the Great Whales

Courtney Murfin holding a leech.Tune in every Tuesday at 2 pm on Instagram Live @ROMtoronto as ROM Kids Coordinator and Camp Director Kiron Mukherjee combines his passion for children’s education with storytelling to bring to life science, history and art for you and your loved ones in the comfort of your own home. Kiron will share activities, easy at-home crafts, behind the scenes anecdotes and fun facts—all connected to the ROM collections.

This time on the ROMKids Show we explore under the depths and learn about whales! Interpretive planner Courtney Murfin joins us to talk about the largest animal to ever swim our oceans, the Blue Whale, our upcoming exhibition, Great Whales: Up Close in Personal, and how exhibits are made. Then we’ll make our big mouth whales!

MATERIALS:

  • paper
  • colouring materials
Step 1.

1. Take your paper and fold it in three. First in half, then top to middle, then bottom to middle.

Step 2.

2. Once your paper is folded, draw the outline of your animal, with their mouth closed. I drew a blue whale!

Step 3.

3. Now you need to draw your BIG MOUTH. Unfold your paper and fill in the middle by making the tail longer, and by connecting the top part of the mouth to the bottom.

Step 4.

4. Time to give your animal something to eat! I gave mine krill to eat. Next colour it all in. Now it’s time for the reveal—your tiny mouth animal is now a BIG MOUTH animal!
