ROMKids Show: The One About Mars and the Rover Perseverance

Tune in every Tuesday at 2:00 pm on Instagram Live @ROMtoronto as ROM Kids Coordinator and Camp Director Kiron Mukherjee combines his passion for children’s education with storytelling to bring to life science, history and art for you and your loved ones in the comfort of your own home. Kiron will share activities, easy at-home crafts, behind the scenes anecdotes and fun facts—all connected to the ROM collections.

Kim Tait. This time on the ROMKids Show we blast off to Mars to learn about the latest Martian rover Perseverance and the search for life on Mars! Dr. Kim Tait joins us to talk about the red planet, how we plan to send Martian rocks back to Earth, and what she hopes to learn from them. Then we’ll make glue and salt paint rovers!

MATERIALS:

  • white glue
  • salt
  • cardstock
  • water colour paint
Step 1.

1. On your paper, draw your picture (I drew a rocket ship!) by carefully squeezing out your white glue. Keep your design simple, so that your shapes stand out!

Step 2.

2. While your glue is still wet, sprinkle salt so that the glue is completely covered.

3. Next, tap the page so the extra salt falls off. Make sure to put something underneath to collect salt!

Step 4.

4. Using your water colours, dab at your salt with your brush. Be careful not to disturb the glue too much. The salt should take on the colour of your paint! Once completely painted, set your marvelous masterpiece aside to dry.
