Kiron will share activities, easy at-home crafts, behind the scenes anecdotes and fun facts—all connected to the ROM collections.
This time on the ROMKids Show we learn about all the insects that have come buzzing out this spring! Entomologist Antonia Guidotti returns to talk about swarming midges, tick safety, flying ants, and more. Then we’ll make our own blooming insects out of paper and water!
MATERIALS:
- paper
- colouring materials
- tray and water
1. Draw a winged insect! Think about bees, butterflies, lady bugs, dragonflies. Draw their wings as if in flight. When drawing the wings they should only be big enough, so that once folded they only reach the other side of the body. If they are too long, your wings will not be able to fold.
2. Cut out your animal and fold the wings.
3. Finally, place your insect, with their wings folded on top of the water. Watch as the wings open! Consider making some flowers to go along with your insect. Your tray of water will be in full bloom!
As the ROMKids Coordinator & Camp Director, Kiron is the public face of the Royal Ontario Museum’s family and children’s programs. Kiron started volunteering at the ROM at age 14 and has never looked back. Though he majored in history at York University, Kiron also considers his early years as a ROMKids camper to be a highly formative part of his education. Now, he strives to provide engaging and educational kids’ programming so that future generations can look back on their ROM experiences as fondly as he has.
