ROMKids Virtual Family Workshops

Boy looking at a knight coming out of an open book.

Are your kids Dizzy for Dinos? Mad for Meteorites? Bonkers for Birds?

ROMKids Virtual Family Workshops give your experts-in-training the opportunity to learn from our ROM experts, all without having to leave your home or backyard.

Available from August 4th to September 3rd, our day-long, activity-based, fun-filled workshops take your kids straight to the learning source. Fourteen unique one-day workshops, recommended for children ages 5 to 12 along with a parent or guardian, feature an interactive conversation with our special ROM expert, fun projects, exciting experiments (think MacGyver), and enriching activities done off screen or outside in your backyard/neighbourhood. The day concludes as participants join other kids and share discoveries and creativity during an intimate afternoon Zoom hangout with our popular ROMKids team.

We’ve gathered ROM curators, technicians, and more – all recognized experts in their fields – to share their knowledge on the ‘ologies’ that your kids just can’t get enough of: archaeology, paleontology, ornithology, meteorology, cetology, geology, the list goes on. Check out our sessions below for the full roster of themes. You can sign up for one, two, three, or all of them!

Code of Conduct

Inclusivity: We strive to create an inclusive setting for all participants.

  • At the ROM we believe every child has the right to a safe, enjoyable, and educational experience in our programs. Our staff and volunteers are respectful of the right of each child to be treated in a fair manner and strive to create an environment where our participants are encouraged to express themselves.
  • Zoom meetings will have auto-captions enabled.

Respect: Always be respectful to all participants and staff.

  • Inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful language and/or behaviour will not be tolerated.
  • Remember that since we are online, chat messages, tone, and facial expressions might not come across as clearly. Keep calm and ask for clarification.
  • Respect each other’s time to speak and refrain from speaking over staff and participants. Please stay muted when it is not your turn. If a participant is unmuted, the ROMKids staff member in the group may mute the camper to keep the flow of speech clear.

Camera/Zoom Time

  • Please try your best to ensure that all participants’ names are displayed correctly on Zoom. We also encourage participants to include their pronouns next to their name.
  • Try to join the meeting 10 minutes prior to the start of each session to ensure that all technology is working properly. If you have any challenges on the day of the workshop, you are welcome to call the ROMKids Registration Line (416) 586-5797 and we will try our best to help you through it.
  • We understand that you may not want to be seen with your video and that’s okay! We encourage participants to try their best to show their face when they feel comfortable.
  • We want to hear you clearly! Avoid loud or distracting backgrounds.
  • If you do not want your background to be shown, no worries! Blur it or choose a family-friendly backdrop.
  • Try your best to contribute to the conversations. We know it can be difficult to speak in a virtual group—we can’t wait to listen and/or see what exciting activities you’ve done!

Safety

  • Never share personal information or click any links unless prompted by a member of ROMKids staff.
  • Do not share the Zoom link with others. We will also take extra precautions to ensure only registered participants are allowed entrance to the Zoom session.

Chat: Remember, the chat must remain respectful and courteous.

  • Re-read your messages and make sure that they are clear and kind. If you think a message might hurt someone’s feelings, re-write it before sending it.
  • Private chats will be disabled for these workshops.

Questions, Comments, Concerns

  • If you have a question or comment, use the Zoom “raise your hand” function and wait for the staff member to call upon you. You may also type in the chat.

Behavioural Concerns

ROMKids asks participants to demonstrate respectful behaviours to themselves and others. If a participant is struggling, Staff will try to provide the best behavioural support possible.

If a participant is repeatedly uncooperative or disruptive, using harmful language, and/or being discourteous, actions will be taken to ensure safety of participants. Staff may mute microphones, turn off cameras, call their caregiver, and/or the participant will be removed from the group.

ROMKids is dedicated to creating an enriching and engaging learning experience and a positive and safe space for all participants. We will make every effort to ensure that everyone is treated with the utmost respect and decency.
