Susan Horvath is a seasoned philanthropic executive with diverse leadership experience in the healthcare, education and research sectors. As President and CEO of the ROM Governors, Susan is responsible for all philanthropic, sponsorship and stewardship programs, and governance of the foundation.
Susan served as Vice President, Philanthropy for the Canadian Cancer Society from 2011 to 2014, where she was responsible for establishing the first national comprehensive campaign to realize new levels of investments to help eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life for people living with cancer. Prior to joining the Canadian Cancer Society, Susan was President of the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation from 2007 to 2010, inspiring philanthropic support for medical research and leading the completion of a $416 million fundraising campaign called The Best Medicine Campaign.
Susan was previously the Vice President External at Robarts Research Institute in London; the Director of Alumni and Development at the University of Western Ontario (UWO); and the Campaign Director, United Way of London & Middlesex. Her 27 years of fundraising experience was preceded by 10 years on faculty at Brescia University College, UWO after attaining a BSc at UWO and MSc at the University of Alberta, teaching and researching in the area of textiles and historic costume. Susan credits the ROM for sparking an early passion in world cultures and inspiring her to pursue an education in textiles and historic costume.
Accredited with the Certified Fund Raising Executive designation in 1995, Susan received the SIRIUS Award for Fund Raising Excellence from the London & Region Fund Raising Executives in 1997, in 2002 the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education honoured Susan for her leadership and in 2012 Susan was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Carmelle Murphy Alumnae Award of Distinction from Brescia University College.
Susan has served for many years in leadership roles on the executive of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Greater Toronto Chapter, the largest chapter in the world of this international organization. In 2016, Susan was recognized as an Outstanding Fundraising Professional by AFP's Greater Toronto Chapter. Also in 2016, she became the Membership & Nominations Vice Chair for the International Women's Forum (Toronto Chapter).
