Family Funday: Digging History

Dig into history as the ROM celebrates International Archaeology Day! From the oldest tools ever used by hominids to the latest technology available to archaeologists, dig, decipher and uncover the secrets to our shared human past.

Activites run from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Free with Museum admission.

Digging the Greeks: Dig into Greek history with experts from the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Program Partner: Consulate General of Greece

Archaeological Institute of America Digs the ROM: The AIA-Toronto Chapter helps the ROM celebrate International Archaeology Day with bones, pots, re-enactors, and so much more. Find out what archaeology is really all about! Program Partner: Archaeological Institute of America-Toronto Society

Archaeology Centre: Meet some amazing archaeologists from the University of Toronto who are engaged in ground-breaking research around the world.

Ancient Cyprus: Delve into the sophisticated and rich of history of Cyprus with ROM experts and get up close to objects from an island that lay at the crossroads of history.

The CRANE Project (Computational Research on the Ancient Near East): Meet the CRANE team, an international and interdisciplinary research team and find out how technology and collaboration is changing our understanding of archaeology in the Near East.

From the Field: Join Dr. Debra Foran and WLU archaeology students and discover their exciting research and experiences in the field.

Live at the ROM: Immerse yourself in ancient Roman military and civilian life with our special guest Roman re-enactors from the Principia Legionis.

Roman Military Demonstrations: Watch as Roman soldiers demonstrate how arms and armour were used and take part in a Roman military drill. 12:30 & 3:30 PM (approx. 20 mins in length) 

Digging Ontario: Dig into the last 10,000 years of this land’s past and find out how you can help protect our unique and fragile legacy for future generations with the Ontario Archaeology Society.

Living Viking History: Dive into the daily lives of these legendary explorers, artisans, and craftspeople with the re-enactors from Program Partner Torvik and Wulfthorpe.

  • Viking Voices: Who will you meet from the Viking village today? Talk with explorers, warriors, farmers, and artisans about their daily lives. 
  • Make a Shield Wall: Grab a shield, join the front line, and imagine yourself as a Norse warrior. Ready? Set? CHAAARGE! 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM

The Maple Leaf Forever: Mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day by recreating life in the trenches and on the Homefront during WWI.

Visiting artists: Join master block carver Kondra Gangadhar, dye expert Jagada Rajappa, and researcher Rajarshi Sengupta and explore the arts of carving woodblocks, dyeing with natural sources, and weaving complex silk himroo cloth in the Deccan. 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:30 – 3:30 PM

Ancient Nubia: Out of the Vaults - Chip away at early Human history and explore stone tools from modern Sudan and Egypt.
