As a Summer Gallery Assistant you will be working part-time to provide responsible, friendly and resourceful assistance to visitors in ROM’s Biodiversity & Schad Galleries. In these Galleries you introduce Museum visitors to the amazing variety and natural interdependence of plants and animals.  The galleries are based on the ROM’s extensive collections and research.  Successful candidates must be available for weekdays, weekends, evening, and holiday shifts and have a clear vulnerable sector check or in the process of getting one as a condition of employment.



Supervised by the Gallery Coordinators and under the direction of the Manager, Learning, you will:

  • Provide assistance to museum visitors by engaging visitors in an interactive gallery environment and guiding them through a learning process.
  • Deliver programming in a variety of galleries throughout the ROM.
  • Ensure safety of specimens and objects and gallery rules are enforced
  • Provide general administrative assistance (e.g. photocopying, arranging schedules, inventory and answering phones).
  • Assist with gallery operations (set up multi-media technologies, development of resources, replenish supplies, program set up, ensure proper cleaning procedures are followed)
  • Work with gallery collections to ensure proper cataloguing of museum objects and specimens.
  • Provide leadership to the volunteer team
  • Assist with additional programming in the Museum
  • Perform related duties as required

  • A background in natural history or culture related topic OR equivalent experience gained in a museum or educational setting is essential.
  • Completion of at least one (1) year of post-secondary education
  • Must have a valid vulnerable sector check or in the process of obtaining one
  • Minimum of one (1) year working directly with the public and with children
    Must be able to use audio, video, computer and other technologies for gallery events and programs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Must be available for 24 hours a week including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • French/English bilingualism is an asset
