Monthly Archive: December admi
Diwali is celebrated by over one billion Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains (and their friends!) in South Asia and among the South Asian Diaspora; it is an official holiday in: Fiji, Guyana, India, Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Suriname, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad and Tobago! Popularly and affectionately known as the ‘festival of lights,’ at Diwali it is customary to light diyas--small lamps--before the darkness of night approaches. Brass or other beautiful lamps will be lit inside the home and placed in each room. The outside of the home is lit aglow with humble clay lamps numbering in the dozens if not hundreds to form beautiful and often elaborate patterns.

Many staff, volunteers, and visitors may remember Mr. Francesco Grosso, who was part of ROM life for 45 years as he entertained and captivated young and older audiences at our Queen's Park entrance with his travelling push-cart filled with treasures and treats. Visitors and staff, and more recently their grandchildren, often looked for him and asked after him. We are very sorry to learn of Mr. Grosso's passing last week.
New research published today in the journal Nature describes a newly-discovered 'ring of teeth' in an otherworldly creature from half a billion years ago.
If you happened to go by the ROM at night last week, you might notice that we were looking quite....volcanic. Over the week, the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal was the canvas for an outdoor activation that featured an animated Mt Vesuvius. The volcano got more and more active, culminating in an explosive show on Friday night for the opening of Pompeii: In the Shadow of the Volcano. See it at the ROM until January 3.
The ROM’s Fashion Follows Form exhibition, which was featured in ROM magazine in the Summer 2014 issue, has won The Richard Martin Exhibition Award, an annual award given by the Costume Society of America.
