One in five Canadians has at least one tattoo, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who sports a Haida symbol on his left shoulder. Tattoos have moved into the mainstream, companies have begun to relax rules on visible tattos in the workplace. The new exhibition charts the journey of tattooing from its deep historical and global roots, via its marginalizaiton, to its current revival in many cultures around the world. Here are six essential tattoo terms to know while walking through the Tattoos exhibition:

1. Cover-Up

A new tattoo designed to obscure or cover an old tattoo by intergrating the old design into the new design.

2. Aftercare

An important post-tattoo step of cleaning and protecting to ensure the skin heals properly and the tattoo appears as designed.

3. Flash

Pre-designed images that can be purchased by tattoo artists or clients as templates for tattoos.

4. Sleeve

Typically a tattoo that runs down a person's arm from shoulder to wrist.

5. Tebori

An ancient form of tattooing where the skin is carved and ink deposited without using a tattoo machine.

6. Stick and Poke

A tattoo method where a single needle is dipped in ink and inserted under the skin until the design is complete.
