Two kids testing a ROM Game Jam video game

The ROM’s annual Game Jam event – a dizzying three-day collaboration involving ninety video game developers – wrapped up in early October, but we’re still enjoying the thrills of the newly designed games, and over the course of the holidays, you will also get the chance to test them out. The action takes place from December 26 to January 3 in the ROM's pop-up Space Arcade, located in the Earth Ranger’s studio (second floor).

Inspired by the ROM’s vast collection of “space rocks,” the latest Game Jam was a great reminder of the ways planetary science continues to promote and challenge human innovation. With the traces of Mars and the Moon literally at their fingertips (the ROM houses over 550 meteorites!), the participants of Game Jam were encouraged to incorporate space research and exploration into their games. Their hard work paid off – the games are a wonderful combination of whimsy and science, inviting players to embark on intergalactic adventures of all kinds.

Have you ever dreamed of navigating a spaceship or searching for alien life on Mars? Or perhaps rerouting an earthbound asteroid? Then you’ll want to try your hand at Rogue Rovers and Astro Miners, two of the games featured during ROM for the Holidays. Oh, and did we mention that Neil deGrasse Tyson makes an important cameo in one of the video games? If you want to go head to head with the renowned scientist in a battle of wits, come join us in the weeks ahead at the ROM’s Space Arcade!
