ROM Offers Accredited High School Courses

ROM partners with Blyth Academy to offer courses in the Sciences and Humanities

Blyth Academy and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) have launched a joint program which will, for the first time ever, allow students to take high school accredited courses inside the ROM. Students will work under the guidance of Blyth teachers and alongside the ROM’s educational and curatorial staff.

Blyth and the ROM will offer a selection of courses in the Sciences and the Humanities in Grades 9 through 12 starting in the summer of 2009 and continuing throughout the academic year of 2009-10. The courses will allow high school students unique access to the Museum’s myriad of resources and hands-on experience as they work with specialists in various fields.

Taught by both Blyth teachers and the ROM’s educational and curatorial staff, courses will include Classical Civilization, Native Studies, Environment and Resource Management, Environmental Design and Anthropology, amongst others.

“We believe that the ROM constitutes the best classroom in the Province of Ontario. Together, our educational teams will provide a unique and transformative educational experience.” said Sam Blyth, Chair, Blyth Academy.

“We are delighted to offer this unique educational opportunity to Ontario High School students,” said William Thorsell, Director and CEO of the ROM. “It should be challenging, enriching and enjoyable for the students as they explore the human and material resources of the ROM.”

Class size will average 12 students. Courses are open to students throughout the province of Ontario and completed credits are transferred back to the student’s home school. Tuition fees are $1,295 per course, with financial aid available through Blyth Academy.
