ROM Celebrates Family Day weekend with Family Funday: One World, February 17 to 20

TORONTO, February 14, 2017 – The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) rolls out a jam-packed line up of activities created especially for Family Day weekend. Family Funday Weekend: One World celebrates our global community with musical performances, films, special workshops and more. From Saturday, February 18 to Monday, February 20, 2017, visitors of all ages can enjoy the Museum and a range of programs that will run throughout the weekend. Activities are FREE with ROM admission. Programming takes place from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Among the highlights of this globally inspired Family Funday Weekend, visitors can enjoy:

  • Asafo Flags & Ghanaian Community - All weekend
    • Special Visiting Asafo Flags Artist Master Asafo Flag artist, Baba Issak of Swedru, Ghana, will present master class workshops and lead community art projects.
    • Asafo Flag Workshop Discover the artistic process, from concept to product, as you transform sketches on paper into your very own Asafo-inspired flags.
  • Celebrate Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 18 when artists and dancers converge on the ROM to dot the eye and feed the lion, Presented by the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, this includes Chinese dance and Children’s choir performers, fortune telling, hands-on calligraphy, crafts, tea tasting, and more.
  • Opera Atelier performs historical dances ranging from Renaissance to Baroque, plus 19th Century social and character dances, Tarantellas and excerpts from the Romantic ballet, choreographed by Opera Atelier’s founding co-artistic director Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg. This family-friendly program will also include a contemporary piece choreographed by guest artist Lukas Malkowski. Keep an ear out for Opera Atelier’s founding co-artistic director Marshall Pynkoski, who will be providing educational and entertaining commentary. Also features a French Baroque aria by soprano Meghan Lindsay. ASL interpretation will be provided for this performance.
  • Melt your followers’ hearts with an exclusive Family Funday weekend ice art activation, located on the Museum’s plaza, outside the Museum’s iconic Michael Lee-Chin Crystal entrance. Snap a selfie and share it using the hashtag #ATROM.
