Picture Yourself as an Emperor Snap a Selfie and Save at the ROM

New ROM marketing campaign launched June 23, 2014

Campaign offers $5 discount on Forbidden City Admission with Proof of Selfie

Forbidden City exhibition features 80 items never before seen outside China

(July 9, 2014 – Toronto, ON) The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) has launched a new campaign inviting Torontonians to picture themselves as an Emperor from China’s Forbidden City. Until September 1, the ROM takes over the transit shelter on the south-west corner of Yonge and Dundas Square. Visitors can take a selfie and tweet it to the ROM using hashtag #ROM100FC to receive $5 off admission to the feature exhibition The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors* presented by the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation.

The "Take a Selfie with the Emperor" transit shelter activation takes the ROM’s exhibition to the streets with a chance for visitors to participate and see themselves in the exhibition. The Forbidden City marketing campaign highlights the rare objects displayed in the show and shares the compelling stories from inside the Forbidden City. The campaign was supported with national media including TV, radio, digital, out-of-home and print ads.

About the Exhibition

The Forbidden City was built and used as the official residence for China's Emperors during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Stories of the lives of China's last Emperors and their families within this vast, mysterious complex have fascinated people for centuries.  The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors features 250 masterpieces from Beijing’s Palace Museum, some never before seen outside China, alongside notable objects from the ROM's own renowned collections. The Forbidden City's rich history is vibrantly brought to life by an engaging cast of real-life characters, ensuring this exhibition is a highlight of the ROM's 2014 Centennial year.  In June 2014, approximately 50 objects were replaced by artifacts in an extensive rotation allowing visitors to experience new stories and more exquisite objects of the Forbidden City.
