Adult Pompeii-related programming overflows at the ROM this fall

Picture of two women wearing togasEarlier this summer, Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) welcomed Pompeii: In the Shadow of the Volcano. The feature exhibition opened explosively on the evening of Friday, June 12 with a specially themed Friday Night Live (FNL) that included fireworks and an eruption projected onto and above the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal.

Since its opening, thousands of visitors, young and old, have enjoyed the exhibition’s 200 objects and many interactive elements. The artifacts, excavated from the famed archaeological site of Pompeii, remained hidden following the violent eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. Buried under metres of volcanic ash, the once-thriving ancient city suddenly - and completely - vanished from sight, remaining buried for almost 1,700 years! These treasures, on display at the ROM until January 3, 2016, tell the remarkable story of the daily lives of the people of Pompeii.

The dramatic exhibition is complemented by an ambitious slate of related programming for scholars, adults and families, alike.  Following a summer hiatus, the ROM Speaks: The World of Pompeii Lectures series continues. Featuring world renowned experts delivering informative lectures, the series explores past and modern day Pompeii and the ever-present danger of life in the shadow of an active volcano.
