Gallery Interpreters

Bringing objects into the galleries, interpreters provide visitors with active exploration activities and share engaging information about each object. Look for gallery interpreters in the Samuel HallCurrelly Gallery and Patrick and Barbara Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-on Biodiversity daily, 1 pm to 3 pm.

Museum Interactives

Interactive displays found in many of the galleries provide an alternative and engaging way of learning about our collections and the stories they represent.

Level 1

The Daphne Cockwell Gallery of Canada: First Peoples includes the BMO Financial Group Theatre. Visitors may listen to Native stories, or watch video programs devoted to Native cultures. The gallery also features an interactive multimedia program about Paul Kane’s life and works.

A bilingual, closed captioned video kiosk describes the history and importance of the four iconic Totem Poles that stand by the Rotunda stairs.

The Death of General Wolfe depicts one of the pivotal moments in Canadian history. A video accompanies the display of the iconic painting by Benjamin West in the Sigmund Samuel Gallery of Canada.

ROM Museum Builders is an interactive digital exhibition located in the Samuel Hall Currelly Gallery. Comprising of two 4.3-metre (14-foot) glass surfaces, the wall explores the history of philanthropy at the ROM and the important role and impact that volunteers and philanthropists have had on its development.

In the ROM Gallery of Chinese Architecture, visitors may watch a video exploring the history of the Tomb of General Zu Dashou (Ming Tomb).

A video kiosk accompanies the Paradise of Maitreya Mural, located in the Bishop White Gallery of Chinese Temple Art.

Level 2

The Museum has two (2) galleries devoted to a tactile and immersive experience. The Patrick and Barbara Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-on Biodiversity and the CIBC Discovery Gallery allow visitors to examine and handle hundreds of objects with trained gallery facilitators.

The James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs includes four (4) interactive touch-screen stations offer an engaging way to learn about the gallery’s specimens.

The Life in Crisis: Schad Gallery of Biodiversity is filled with engaging video that explore the diversity of life on earth. Visit the Earth Rangers Studio located in the gallery for live presentations and interactive activities throughout the week.

Visitors may explore interactive e-labelling kiosks in the Teck Suite of Galleries: Earth's Treasures. Each display area includes digital replicas that allow visitors to get a closer look at each specimen. Video displays are located throughout the gallery and a multi-media presentation accompanies the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Level 3

Audio stations in the south wing of the Samuel European Galleries provide intriguing insights into the social life of each era, as well as evocative period music. Visitors will also find a video kiosk standing next to the display of the Earl of Pembroke’s Armour.

The Gallery of Africa: Egypt includes two video kiosks on pyramids and hieroglyphics (closed-captioning is not available) and a sound installation on the Punt Wall—the Museum’s cast of the wall from the temple of Queen Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahri. Captioned Video kiosks accompany the iconic Statue of Sekmeht and Cleopatra displays.

A bilingual, closed captioned video complements The Striding Lion on display in the Wirth Gallery of the Middle East.

The Blue Lady on display in the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery is accompanied by a bilingual, closed captioned video interview with the artist.
