Ways to Support the ROM
Thank you for considering a gift to the ROM! The ROM Governors gratefully accept contributions in support of ROM activities. Our excellent collections, research, exhibits and programs cannot flourish without the continued support of ROM members and donors from across the country and around the world.
Whether you choose to become a member, make a contribution to a particular ROM project, donate an artifact to the collections, or include the Museum in your Will we are pleased to welcome you to the ROM family.

An outright gift is one in which every dollar goes to work the moment it is given. You can give cash or a non-cash asset such as securities or real estate and receive a donation receipt for your gift. Outright gifts, as separate from membership donations, may support a wide variety of ROM activities. You may also choose to establish an endowed fund or contribute to an existing ROM Governors fund.
Establishing a Named Endowment
In recent years, the ROM has worked hard to build its capital endowment fund. An endowment is a fund for which the capital is held and invested over a period of years, often in perpetuity, while the income is spent on present-day needs. Such funds have supported the ROM in many fundamental ways, including research expeditions, acquisitions, public programs, purchases of equipment, and most recently, the salaries of museum curators. You may contribute to the Museum's current endowment or establish your own. Endowment funds may be named to honour a loved one or to celebrate a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or other special occasion.
Gifts of Securities
Effective May 3, 2006, gifts of appreciated publicly listed securities to a registered charity are exempt from any capital gains tax, with the tax receipt reflecting the full market value of the gift. The resulting tax credit far outweighs the tax incurred from the initial cost of purchasing the securities. Publicly traded securities include shares, bonds, warrants and options traded on any prescribed stock exchange as well as mutual fund units.
To make a donation of securities to the ROM, you may instruct your financial institution or broker to transfer your gift of securities electronically or via certificate form to the ROM Governors. The amount of your tax receipt will reflect the fair market value of your gift.
To obtain the ROM Governors' Gift of Publicly Listed Securities Form, please call Scott Forfar, Vice President, Advancement and Operations, at 416.586.8012 or e-mail at giving@rom.on.ca.
Gifts to the Collection
As a registered charity, the Royal Ontario Museum can issue donation receipts for the fair market value of gifts in kind, such as artifacts or specimens. Additional tax benefits can be afforded to you if your gift is certified as being of cultural importance and national significance by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.
Please call the Office of the Governors at 416.586.5660.

Your Will and other Deferred Gifts
A deferred gift to the Museum is one that is arranged now but is not available for use by the ROM until some time in the future.
Bequest
By remembering the ROM in your will, you can leave a legacy supporting your interests at the Museum. Undesignated bequests are particularly valued as they allow the ROM Governors to apply the principal and/or income to the Museum's highest priorities. Your estate will receive a donation receipt for the full amount of the bequest which can assist in reducing the tax payable on your final income tax return.
Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance can be an affordable way for you to make a future major gift to the Museum while enjoying tax relief during your lifetime. For example, if you make the ROM Governors the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you are entitled to a donation receipt for the value of the policy. If premiums are still owing, you are also eligible for a donation receipt for each premium paid. Or by designating the ROM Governors as the beneficiary of your policy (or Group Life, RRSP, RRIF, or annuity) your estate can take advantage of the tax relief.
Charitable Gift Annuity
You can make a contribution to the ROM and receive, in turn, guaranteed income payments for life. The ROM will use a portion of your gift to purchase an annuity for you from a commercial insurance company. All or most of your annuity payments can be tax free and you may also receive a small donation receipt for a portion of your contribution.
Charitable Remainder Trust
By establishing a trust to support the Royal Ontario Museum, you can enjoy for life, or a term of years, income from the trust. The ROM Governors receive what remains in the trust after death, or after a specified number of years. At the time the trust is established, you are entitled to a donation receipt for the residual interest in the trust.
Residual Interest
A residual interest gift is an arrangement under which property is committed to the ROM Governors, while you retain its use (usually a residence) to enjoy during your lifetime. At death, the property is transferred to the ROM Governors. This allows you to receive a donation receipt for the discounted value of the residual interest owned by the ROM Governors.
The Charles Trick and Ada Mary Currelly Society
If you have planned a legacy to benefit the Museum through a bequest, gift of life insurance or other deferred gift, the ROM Governors would be pleased to welcome you as a member of the Charles Trick and Ada Mary Currelly Society.
Named after the first Director of the Royal Ontario Museum of Archaeology, and his wife, the Currelly Society affords an opportunity for the ROM Governors to extend the Museum's warm appreciation to you through an annual event and behind the scenes tours. With your permission, your name could also be listed in the ROM's Annual Report.

Enjoy an intimate connection with Museum life at the ROM by joining the Royal Patrons' Circle (RPC) with a donation of $1500 or more.
Contributions from RPC donors support core ROM operations on an annual basis and are the single most important source of annual gift income for the Museum. RPC donations enrich the preservation of cultural heritage and Museum collections, advance the ROM's pursuit of knowledge as well as provide assistance to other core operations such as educational and public programming.
RPC Members also enjoy a number of opportunities that bring them closer to the heart of the Museum. Through the benefits of RPC Membership, donors have the opportunity to indulge their interests and passion for the Museum through special activities such as Behind-the-Scenes tours with ROM curators, social events at the Museum and personalized service through the RPC office.
During this exciting transitional (and transformational) period of Renaissance ROM, the Museum needs the support of Patrons more than ever. RPC donors are building the programs that will be housed in the future Museum.
