Renaissance ROM
The Renaissance ROM campaign launched in 2002 and was initially supported by the Provincial and Federal Governments with a total contribution of $60 million. The Hon. Hilary M. Weston joined as Campaign Chair in 2003 and has been instrumental in the success of Renaissance ROM. In fact, it was her skillful persuasion that convinced businessman Michael Lee-Chin to be the lead donor of the campaign. It is this historical meeting between them that Lee-Chin delights in reciting. He always begins the story with his response to the Hon. Hilary M. Weston’s request for a gift:
“Mrs. Weston, why would you come to ask a poor Jamaican for a gift when all you have to do is ask your husband?’ I posed the question to see what her answer would be. “She said, ‘Mike, everybody knows Galen can write the cheque. But if Galen wrote the cheque, it would be business as usual. It wouldn’t move the meter. But if you wrote the cheque, it would be an inspiration to every single Canadian, every single new Canadian and every single immigrant.’ I thought, oh my gosh. Checkmate.”
To that end, Renaissance ROM has been one of Canada’s most culturally diverse campaigns with several community-driven fundraising initiatives championing the transformation of the Museum and supporting its international galleries and collections.
The Renaissance ROM campaign is in its final year. To support its successful closure, a group of volunteers have come together to create the Countdown to Completion Task Force, led by ROM Governor, Rob Pierce. This group will guide the campaign through its final stages and past the finish line.
