Zephyr and Psyche

Zephyr, the South Wind, is a harbinger of Spring and a messenger of hope. Here he is depicted as a curly-haired youth standing with his left foot at the base of a column of cloud holding the end of a swirling swath of drapery in his right hand. His left arm encircles the waist of voluptuous Psyche, who seems to float in his grasp.
The piece recalls the story that Venus was so jealous of Psyche's beauty and Cupid's love for her that she tormented the girl until she decided to end her life by leaping from a precipice. Cupid entreated Zephyr to rescue her, and he did so by catching her in his strong and gentle arms on a column of rising air.
This reproduction is made of durastone, a gypsum composition, with a finish to resemble bronze.
