Oil Lamp

From a clay oil lamp, Palestine, early or mid-first century AD.

Royal Ontario Museum 997.149.1.2

The original lamp was presented by President Zalman Shazar of Israel to the Right Honourable Roland Michener P.C. Q.C., Governor General of Canada, as a gift, in 1967; he in turn, kindly loaned it to the Royal Ontario Museum. It has since been donated to the museum by Diana Michener Schatz.

This type of lamp is often called "Herodian", after the dynasty that ruled Jewish Palestine under Rome. Such lamps were common in the area of Jerusalem in the first half of the first century A.D., often called the Early Roman or Herodian Period. In lamps of this type, the body is thrown on the potter's wheel, the nozzle is mould-made, and the handle is formed and attached by hand.

Lighting the Oil Lamp:
1. Place the wick through the spout of the lamp.
2. Fill with olive oil, or lamp oil.
3. Let wick absorb oil and then light it at spout.
4. It will burn for about 2 hours.
5. Wick is made of rush: it can be obtained from Lewiscraft.
