Ulu Jewellery

Silver-plated white metal. From a Baffinland Inuit ulu, or semi-lunar knife.

Royal Ontario Museum HC2214

Collected and donated by Bishop Archibald Lang Fleming.

The ulu consists of a crescent-shaped metal blade, a metal shank, and a wooden handle. One end of the shank is riveted to the blade, while the opposite end is inserted into the handle through a central perforation. The ulu is specifically a woman's tool used for scraping fat, tissue, and hair from skins, slicing skins in preparation for sewing, and for cutting meat.
