Netsuke Horse Pendant

Gold-plated brass on a black silk cord. From an ivory netsuke of a standing stallion, mane and tail incised. The original is signed on a slightly raised rectangle on right rump, "Tomotada".

Royal Ontario Museum 989.24.26.3

Netsuke were used by Japanese men in the Edo Period (1603 - 1867) as toggles from which they suspended small personal accessories such as inro (containers comprising tiered compartments to hold powdered medicines) and tobacco pouches. When worn, the netsuke rested on the upper edge of the waist sash above the man's right hip.

Tomotada was a Kyoto netsuke-shi (master carver of netsuke) in the 18th century A.D. He was especially known for his many ivory netsuke of oxen and tigers, but this horse also demonstrates his fine sense of form and design.
