Sterling silver or gold-plated, adapted from a bronze brooch originally made ca.600 A.D. in northern Italy where the Lombards, one of the Migration tribes, had settled.
Royal Ontario Museum 927x84.15.
Brooches consisting of a horse decorated with punch-marked concentric circles were popular in western Europe during the 6th and 7th centuries A.D. Similar examples have been found in Italy, France and Greece.
