Horus Pin

This falcon figure is adapted from one of the iconographic images painted on an Egyptian cartonnage coffin of the 22nd Dynasty (945-730 B.C.)

Royal Ontario Museum 910.10

It represents the solar Horus which occurs repeatedly on coffins of this period. Deities were often depicted as birds, the outstretched wings symbolizing protection from the evils of the underworld. The solar Horus also represents resurrection after death through association with the rising sun.
