Province of Veraguas, Isthmus of Panama, 13th century AD

Gold plated, from a decorative pin in the form of a hollow gold frog.

Veraguas was a gold working and exporting centre in Latin America. Frogs were a common product, often symbolizing rain.

The original frog has flat hind feet, small rings forming front feet and protruding eyes. A raised band of incised design on the back terminates in a coil representing the nose.
