Fleur de Lis Jewellery
Gold-plated fleur-de-lis pin and earrings, design adapted from fleurs-de-lis painted on an earthenware jug. French, Emile Gallé, 1880-90.
Royal Ontario Museum 993.152.1.
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Georges Masson.
The fleur-de-lis is a mediaeval heraldic device believed to be based on the lily or iris. It is thought to have been first used by Charlemagne (742-814 A.D.) and later adopted by the Kings of France. Emile Gallé, who designed the jug which inspired this jewellery, was a leading exponent of the Art Nouveau style. Working in Nancy, France, he is best known as a glass-maker and designer, but he also designed ceramics and furniture.
