Black Fly Jewellery
Sterling silver earrings, brooch and lapel pin, adapted from blackfly specimens in the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum.
Blackflies are as much a part of the natural world as the flowing waters in which they breed, and they are found worldwide. Two hundred and fifty species occur in North America, sixty-five of them in Ontario. Of these, only four or five species are considered pests of humans. Blackflies bridge two radically different environments. As terrestrial organisms they are despised as noxious pests, while as aquatic organisms, their larvae are regarded as beneficial elements of the food web.
Handcrafted by Liz Goluch.
