Han Dynasty, 206 BC – AD 220
During the Han Dynasty, tiles with lively scenes based on myth and reality were used to decorate tombs. During the western Han period (206 BC – AD 24), government sponsored expeditions were first sent to central Asia in search of the fabled “blood sweating” horses of Ferghana. These horses became status symbols which may account for their popularity as decorative motifs for the tombs of the aristocracy.
